OBJECTIVES |

The objectives of the plan are the following:
1. Lessen the impact of HIV/AIDS on orphans and vulnerable children;
2. Develop the institutional capacity in order to act in the area of intervention of HIV/AIDS;
3. Develop the community’s capacity to take part in the care of HIV/AIDS orphans and vulnerable children;
4. Make sure the management and assessment system is working to manage and assess the response.
Previous propositions are linked to one of various factors that have directed the design of this project. This project is designed to significantly contribute to the efforts undertaken either by the government or by the society’s various institutions which aim is a combined intervention of activities.
The project will associate various components in its introduction and execution, particularly vocational training, pre-schooling, and rehabilitation and psychosocial support to the orphaned and vulnerable children.

Pillars on Prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV, Pediatric treatment , and Prevention among adolescents and youth through peer education
1. The visitors will meet staff working in the PMTCT programme, who will guide them through the different stages of the programme, Le. voluntary counselling and testing for ail pregnant women who come for pre-natal consultations, follow up for women who test either positive and negative, administration of the ARV drug Nevirapine to the woman before delivery and to the baby after birth, follow up support in the Positive Mothers Club.
2. The visitors will also visit the Youth Friendly Health Services (YFHS) which started in 2000. The YFHS has been offering Voluntary Counselling and Testing Services (VCT) since 2004. During last year, more than 1,500 young people attended this YFHS. The VCT has linkages with the Beira Day Hospital, where young people have the opportunity to receive anti-retroviral treatment, treatment for opportunistic infections and for sexually transmitted infections.
At the youth friendly health service, a peereducator group is providing information on how to prevent sexually transmitted diseases including HIV/AIDS and unwanted adolescent pregnancies.

Visit to a Mobile Unit Present:
~ Focus: P1 Prevention of new infections among children and young people
The mobile unit consists of a multimedia vehicle equipped with videos, a giant screen for projection of films, a radio and Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials. It also carries a set of camping materials for focal group discussions, community debates and dissemination of information and knowledge on HIV/AIDS, youth friendly health services (YFHS) and girls education.
Activities carried out with the mobile unit reach young people and children in rural communities with high illiteracy rates and very limited access to electronic media. Prior to the arrival of the mobile unit, the community leaders undertake a door-to-door visit, inviting residents to participate in the programmes, which are designed with the participation of local leaders.

Meeting with Khulupira (Association for people living with HIV and AlDS) for an orientation on their UNICEF-supported activities for children orphaned and made vulnerable by HIV/AIDS (OVC).
With the support of UNICEF, Khulupira has been implementing a school awareness programme on HIV/AIDS since 2002. By end 2004, the project had reached almost 23,000 school children, aged 13-18 years. The school awareness activity is done in a participatory manner, where activists organise games and debates to stimulate the whole learning process. Testimonials by association members on their HIV+ status have become an effective tool used to reduce stigma and to increase awareness.
Focus: P4 Protection, care and support for orphaned and vulnerable children (OVC)
The visit will also include conversations with activists to find out about how about their work in supporting OVC as weil as home visits to child headed households where orphaned children who have lost both parents to AlDS are taking care of younger siblings.
